UBD RAKIS showcase their talent

9 August 2009 (Wednesday) – To further encourage and support Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Rakis club talent, the Rakis club recently organised an appreciation night – “Malam Rentak Rasa”. The event was held at the UBD Female Residential College multi purpose hall.

The guest of honour was UBD Dean of Students, Dk Dr Nurolaini bte Pg Hj Muhammad Kifli. Also present was UBD Deputy Dean of Students, Dr Hj Ramlee bin Tingkong, academic staff as well as representatives from the UBD Student Representative Council (PMUBD). The event was not only attended by those who are residing at the UBD residential college, but also interested members of the public.

The event saw various performances from the Rakis club like the Mahsuri legendary drama, a comedy drama titled “Jangan” and also a special performance by the new UBD students called “GenNext performance”.

The performances were then concluded with a video presentation of “3 premier” in which the Rakis members shot three different movies around the UBD campus

One of the Rakis members said, “The objective of the event was to foster relationship between the senior and junior members of the club. It also helps the students to enhance their skills and creativity in organising such a event.”

The Rakis club members also set up a mini bazaar at the female residential college foyer. Various food items, clothes and literature books were available at the mini bazaar.

The Rakis club is currently under the UBD Student Association (PMUBD) and is supervised by the UBD Malay Literature academic staff. Members of the Rakis club are mostly Malay Literature students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS). The club is well known for performing drama shows in UBD as well as at public events.

BFRD & NDMC @ BRIDEX 2009




Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) and National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) set up its booth at the Brunei Pavilion during the 2nd BRIDEX 2009 held at BRIDEX Centre, Jerudong. Among the equipment exhibited are the Rosenbauer Brega firefighting suit which is the latest firefighting suit used by BFRD and also showcase several new system used by the BFRD such as the Fire Rescue Management System (FRMS).

Meanwhile NDMC showcase its functions and role during disaster. NDMC also exhibited their uniforms and also the disaster survival backpack.

UBD organise art fest

August 12 2009 (Wednesday) – Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) organize an Art Fest to showcase its student creativity. Various exhibitions, demonstrations and performance are done during the event. The Art Fest also done with coincidence of the International Youth Day.

The Art Fest is participated by the UBD Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) students, UBD Photography Club, UBD Educational Technology Centre (ETC), UBD Dance Club, RAKIS and UBD Gulingtangan club. Present to witnessed the Art Fest at the UBD Taman Selera (Cafeteria) is the UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr.Hj.Zulkarnain, UBD Faculties and section deans, senior staffs and Student Representative Council.

During the afternoon art fest the students enjoy the performance from the UBD RAKIS club which showcase their poem and drama and also an energetic traditional dance from the UBD Dance Culture club. Cikgu Ali Sabri an officer from the Student Affairs Section (SAS) “This event is conducted to showcase the UBD students talents and at the same time it is also to promote the clubs activities to the UBD student especially the new intakes”.

Some of the UBD Art Fest exhibitions such as the arts will be showcased at the Taman Selera for the students. While some of the Clubs also conducting several activities for the students such as the UDB Photography Club which organize a portrait photo shoot.

Unsung heroes of UBD

10 August 2009 (Tuesday) – A forest fire occurred near Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) guard post and near a water tank at UBD during the lunch hour at 12 noon. Two fire appliances from Jerudong and Lambak Kanan rushed to the scene to fight the fire. Also helping was the SPSS security guard and also traffic police who direct the traffic.

The situation worsened in the afternoon when another fire sparked at a hill behind the UBD Chancellor Hall and also the UBD Sport Complex as well. More fire support arrived at UBD in the afternoon to fight the fire. At the UBD Chancellor Hall, the fire was worsened with the strong wind. The firefighters are supported by the SPSS Security guards at the Chancellor Hall and a UBD student.

According to Tuan Ranee from the BFRD C Operational Command and in-charge of the operation, the fire are spreading rapidly which is fueled by the dry vegetation and strong winds. He added that every firefighters are on standby at the fire points to extinguish and control the fire before it reaches properties around it. During the operation firefighters from Jerudong, Berakas, Lambak Kanan and Women Operational Unit are involved.

The firefighters are lucky as all fire hydrants around UBD operational with high water pressure, thus making their operations worked well. Also supporting were the Women Operational Unit also on the fire site to provide drinks and food ration for the firefighters on duty. Public Works Department (PWD) water tankers are also on scene providing water supply support.

Meanwhile UBD Sports Complex, the forest fire ravaged the forested area around the hockey field and also the UBD football field B. Due to the vast area of fire, the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) sent their helicopters to provide water drop and support the firefighters. According to a firefighter in-charge of the area he said “Luckily the forest area behind the Female Residential College already burned few months back, thus it become a natural fire-break”.

The firefighters worked around the clock to extinguish all fires at UBD and its surroundings. Until night time, firefighters and their appliance still can be seen extinguishing fires and on standby at the site. The firefighters also seen damping some of the forested areas at UBD and its surroundings to ensure the fire will not affect it in the future.
