What inside the box battery grip, user manual and the battery slots.

At last after a few month of ordering and booking it from the Stylefree Cameras @ Facebook, I managed to get my Octopus BGE8 battery grip order which can be used on the Canon E0S550D. As a third party option from getting the original it managed to save a few bucks compared to buying the original grip which cost around B$200 plus while this one cost me B$100.

When mounted it on my Canon EOS550d it feel very comfortable especially when shooting vertically. Besides in case of emergency the AA battery slot can be used where you can buy the AA at nearest shop in case your battery pack dries up of damaged. Anywhere so far no problems in using it.

Recently just bought the Lowepro Terraclime 10 camera bag from the Hua Ho Tanjong Bunut at a discount price around B$19. Just buying it as backup bag for my mini digital camera as previously I already have original camera bag. The Terraclime 10 is said too be made from PET bottle as the package tell it so. Also the paper packaging is also made from recycled material. The Terraclime range is part of Lowepro support to Polar Bear conservation.

The package consist of the packaging, the bag and lastly the strap. The internal of the bag also includes a pocket to store memory cards as well as its box. So far it is so good as it is locked by using locked type lock and not velcro as my other bags do so. It is also comfortable to hook it up on my belt during my travel.

In order to appreciate the involvement of teachers and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members for their contribution in improving the Dato Ratna Haji Muhammad Jaafar Primary School, Kiarong the school recently (30 April 2011, Saturday) held an appreciation day.

Present to as the special guest to the event was Hj.Awang bin Hj.Ghani, Action Senior Supervisor of Brunei 1 and 3 schools. Also present was the school headmisteress Cikgu Hjh Taibah binti Hj.Ahmad as well as the school teaches and pupils parents. The event started with the reciatal of Al-Fatihah and thanksgiving prayer followed by the opening remarks of the school principal representatives. The special guest then present token of appreciation and certificates to PTA members, teachers and students who are involved in the “Numeracy Intervention” project which are implemented at the school to improve the pupils skills in mathematics.

A special performance by the pupils which consists of choir, physical movement drills and “Samalindang” dance was also performed for those who present. The special guest also launched the school “I love Books” section which are established at the school to improve the reading skills. An exhibition on the school projects namely the Dato Ratna Kiarong Intervention On Numeracy (DR.K’s IN) and Creative month of Design and Technology (D&T) was also showcased to the special guest and those who present to the event.

APB exhibition ends with high note

24 April 2011 Sunday - The Academy Of Brunei Studies (APB), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday afternoon concluded its three day traditional industries exhibition. The exhibition which started last Friday (22 April 2011) at the Times Square Shopping Complex, Berakas concluded yesterday (Sunday, 24 April 2011) at 4:00pm.

The exhibition which are held in conjunction with UBD 25^th anniversary and to celebrate the tenth year APB producing graduates are conducted by APB third year undergraduates features over 50 research conducted by the students which focused on the traditional industries in Brunei ranging from food industries, services industries as well as crafts and skills industries. Also been featured during the exhibition are research conducted by APB second and final year undergraduates.

According to one of the APB undergraduates exhibiting his research Mohd Zaiem said “During the exhibition the public response are very overwhelming, most of them applaud the APB as well as UBD effort in exposing such traditional industries as they see the exhibition can be a foundation to expose the rare as well as unknown traditional industries which are not known to the public” He also added that during the three day exhibition a Gulingtangan performance as well as quizzes are held for the visitors.

Meanwhile a members of public from Lambak Kanan said “We as public see the students effort are good as such exhibition not only help to expose the students to expose their research results but at the same time it can be a way to help the local Small Medium Enterprise (SMEs) to expose their products to the public through its students.”

This year exhibition was bigger than the previous edition where it saw the involvement of nearly 150 APB students, UBD Volunteering students as well as APB lecturers. It also attracts over 500 visitors from all ages which are recorded during the three day exhibition. The committee also would like to thanks all parties especially researched individuals and sponsors for making the research and event a successful event.

The Core food court opens to public

The food court at the UBD new residential college located at the central building or popularly known as "The Core" had extended its operation to the public residing at the nearby areas.

Currently they are five operators operating each doors of the shops at "The Core". Since its soft launching few months back the public response at the food court are overwhelming. The food court opening is not only able to cater the UBD students residing at the new residential college complex but it also open to the public as an initiative by UBD to bind ties with the local community

According to one of the officer at the new residential college Mrs Raianon Hamid said "Since the operators started operations one by one few months back the public response are very overwhelming especially during lunch time. Currently the food courts operators served various food according to their field such as fast food, Indian food, Malay food and beverages". She also added that currently the UBD management are under progress to expand the "The Core" building usage and not only concentrate on food court but more shops such as souvenir shops and minimart will be open soon.

Currently there are five operators operating their shops namely The Ideal Cafe and Grill, The Ur-Got dessert and snack which is newly established at UBD, Sabra restaurant and catering, Jessamina Restaurant and Cafe and UBD corporation beverages shop.

My first National Day photography trip last 23rd February 2010 is full of smile and patriotism. As usual the prioroty of the trip is to shoot fire appliances a.k.a fire appliances "hunting". Anywhere thanks to Cgu.Ali (UBD SAS) for providing transport for the trip hehe also thanks to Dr.Nurol for "mendulur-ing" me to use her Canon EOS 1000D. Although the light drizzle make stressed me for a while however with the N.Day spirit and many "unknown" faces whistling me for snapping their pictures it makes me happy to be part of the photographer of the day. Will see you all again in next years n.day parade.

9 August 2009 (Wednesday) – To further encourage and support Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Rakis club talent, the Rakis club recently organised an appreciation night – “Malam Rentak Rasa”. The event was held at the UBD Female Residential College multi purpose hall.

The guest of honour was UBD Dean of Students, Dk Dr Nurolaini bte Pg Hj Muhammad Kifli. Also present was UBD Deputy Dean of Students, Dr Hj Ramlee bin Tingkong, academic staff as well as representatives from the UBD Student Representative Council (PMUBD). The event was not only attended by those who are residing at the UBD residential college, but also interested members of the public.

The event saw various performances from the Rakis club like the Mahsuri legendary drama, a comedy drama titled “Jangan” and also a special performance by the new UBD students called “GenNext performance”.

The performances were then concluded with a video presentation of “3 premier” in which the Rakis members shot three different movies around the UBD campus

One of the Rakis members said, “The objective of the event was to foster relationship between the senior and junior members of the club. It also helps the students to enhance their skills and creativity in organising such a event.”

The Rakis club members also set up a mini bazaar at the female residential college foyer. Various food items, clothes and literature books were available at the mini bazaar.

The Rakis club is currently under the UBD Student Association (PMUBD) and is supervised by the UBD Malay Literature academic staff. Members of the Rakis club are mostly Malay Literature students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS). The club is well known for performing drama shows in UBD as well as at public events.

BFRD & NDMC @ BRIDEX 2009

Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) and National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) set up its booth at the Brunei Pavilion during the 2nd BRIDEX 2009 held at BRIDEX Centre, Jerudong. Among the equipment exhibited are the Rosenbauer Brega firefighting suit which is the latest firefighting suit used by BFRD and also showcase several new system used by the BFRD such as the Fire Rescue Management System (FRMS).

Meanwhile NDMC showcase its functions and role during disaster. NDMC also exhibited their uniforms and also the disaster survival backpack.

August 12 2009 (Wednesday) – Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) organize an Art Fest to showcase its student creativity. Various exhibitions, demonstrations and performance are done during the event. The Art Fest also done with coincidence of the International Youth Day.

The Art Fest is participated by the UBD Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) students, UBD Photography Club, UBD Educational Technology Centre (ETC), UBD Dance Club, RAKIS and UBD Gulingtangan club. Present to witnessed the Art Fest at the UBD Taman Selera (Cafeteria) is the UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr.Hj.Zulkarnain, UBD Faculties and section deans, senior staffs and Student Representative Council.

During the afternoon art fest the students enjoy the performance from the UBD RAKIS club which showcase their poem and drama and also an energetic traditional dance from the UBD Dance Culture club. Cikgu Ali Sabri an officer from the Student Affairs Section (SAS) “This event is conducted to showcase the UBD students talents and at the same time it is also to promote the clubs activities to the UBD student especially the new intakes”.

Some of the UBD Art Fest exhibitions such as the arts will be showcased at the Taman Selera for the students. While some of the Clubs also conducting several activities for the students such as the UDB Photography Club which organize a portrait photo shoot.

Unsung heroes of UBD

10 August 2009 (Tuesday) – A forest fire occurred near Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) guard post and near a water tank at UBD during the lunch hour at 12 noon. Two fire appliances from Jerudong and Lambak Kanan rushed to the scene to fight the fire. Also helping was the SPSS security guard and also traffic police who direct the traffic.

The situation worsened in the afternoon when another fire sparked at a hill behind the UBD Chancellor Hall and also the UBD Sport Complex as well. More fire support arrived at UBD in the afternoon to fight the fire. At the UBD Chancellor Hall, the fire was worsened with the strong wind. The firefighters are supported by the SPSS Security guards at the Chancellor Hall and a UBD student.

According to Tuan Ranee from the BFRD C Operational Command and in-charge of the operation, the fire are spreading rapidly which is fueled by the dry vegetation and strong winds. He added that every firefighters are on standby at the fire points to extinguish and control the fire before it reaches properties around it. During the operation firefighters from Jerudong, Berakas, Lambak Kanan and Women Operational Unit are involved.

The firefighters are lucky as all fire hydrants around UBD operational with high water pressure, thus making their operations worked well. Also supporting were the Women Operational Unit also on the fire site to provide drinks and food ration for the firefighters on duty. Public Works Department (PWD) water tankers are also on scene providing water supply support.

Meanwhile UBD Sports Complex, the forest fire ravaged the forested area around the hockey field and also the UBD football field B. Due to the vast area of fire, the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) sent their helicopters to provide water drop and support the firefighters. According to a firefighter in-charge of the area he said “Luckily the forest area behind the Female Residential College already burned few months back, thus it become a natural fire-break”.

The firefighters worked around the clock to extinguish all fires at UBD and its surroundings. Until night time, firefighters and their appliance still can be seen extinguishing fires and on standby at the site. The firefighters also seen damping some of the forested areas at UBD and its surroundings to ensure the fire will not affect it in the future.

On 3rd June 2009 (Wednesday) a group of 27 UBD Students headed by Hj.Afiq (Head of ICT and Publicity Exco) and supported by Bazilah (Health, Safety and Environment Exco) conducted a trip to the Berakas Fire and Rescue Station. The group arrives at the station around 8:30am and they proceed to the Special Squad Unit Lecture Theatre to hear briefing from SO Norzali, and fire officer Fairul and Aflan about history, role and jobs of fire rescue and also career opportunities.

From briefing the group proceed to the Special Squad training tower where SO Rozita brief about the Special Suqd and witness the Special Squad personnel demonstrating the building abseiling technique such as Spiderman technique, Victim rescue technique, General abseiling and the famous flying fox. Some students are given chance to flying fox.

Their last stop is the Women Operation Unit Station where they tried the fireman sliding pole and seeing around the station. Lastly, they are brief about various fire appliances used at the station and given chance to have a ride on the station sole Hydraulic Platform (Snorkel) appliance.

At last PMUBD would like to say thanks to the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department personnel, Berakas FRS, Women Operational Unit and Special Squad members for being friendly and cooperative during the visit. Insyallah, 2nd trip to the fire station will be conducted in next semester.

Among the objectives of the trip is to expose students to the real-life of the firefighters, as a foundation to firefighting career and as self awareness program for emergency.

28 April 2009, Tuesday - A bushfire had occurred at the bushes along Muara-Tutong Highway (near UBD hostel area). Roughly the fire started around 5:50pm and the first firefighitng team arrives from Lambak Kanan FRS using a Light Pumper. I was walking from the UBD just to cover the fire (for first time covering cases). Until this news was published a supporting team from Berakas FRS was called out to support the Lambak Kanan team.

Last Sunday I become the AJK at my cousin wedding function. When I arrive saw a Toyota Corolla police car, so without wasting my time I pull out my FZ28 and snap it (in order to test whether the policeman will give a "talk" to me or....). While snapping a group of girls AJK near the police car kept whispering "gambar sini". I turned to them and just smiling..

However, after passing through them I feel it is a loss as this is my first test as a weeding photographer using my FZ28 huhu. ANywhere, I will not repeat this mistake anymore...

Year 2009 is the year I am getting "older" which is my 20th birthday. Also in addition Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) celebrate their belated 49th birthday on my birthday 11th March. On that auspicious date they blessed their 11 new appliance which consist of WRLs, TTL, LPs, CCs and SS.

The commissioning of this appliances make my spirit to shoot fire appliances higher, not only fire appliances but police cars, ambulances as well. As in this year saw positive sign in my emergency photography skills, I will keep continuing to shoot emergency appliances as many as I can. Possibly will plan to make a book on the emergency services vehicles in Brunei to lift UBD name, PMUBD name and everyone who involve in my emergency vehicles photography; Insyallah.

Good and Bad News

Beginning story....
Ha ha at last I own my semi pro thingy the Panasonic DMC FZ28. Bought on 15 February 2009, it is on my target to own it before the 25th N.Day. Intended to try it the next day, something bad and unxpected happened.... The night I purchased the camera I ditch my older FX-10 camera and give it back to daddy.

The next day....
Thought to be a "fake" N.Day rhearsal at the camp. It was learned that i am joining the cadet contingent. So the chance to take and test FZ28 is 0%. Ahhh, quite stressful at all as I used to bring along my camera. What make I more stress and losing spirit to join the parade is that the emergency appliances are around me but what can i do as i don't bring my FZ28..

The night after the day...
Sembahyang Hajat for DPMM 35th birthday. It is the first task for me with my new weapon the FZ28. After snapping a few night shot using it i feel it is a good camera and money worthy ha ha. Before ending my "mission' the VC jokes to me when I shoot his photo "already many my photo?" he asked jokingly. Ha ha just a firt job and my camera had been praised.

The next, next, next day....
Rhearsal again. But now after parade my contingent was seating at a "good position" to shoot photos. My heart feels bad when I see cameraman shooting photos are around huhu. But what can I do my "weapons" are absent. So just watching the rhearsal motionlessly. =(

In the afternoon...
Cadet weekly training at CH. I brought along my new weapon the FZ28. It is her "1st cadet job".

For conclusion.
I think as "cameraman" I can't live one day without my camera. So the morale from this is "never dith the old ones if you got the new one"

I am sure if my cameras have emotion my FX10 will laugh at my FZ28 as it never saw action in large scale function compare to FX10 who I bring along with in national function such as HM birthday in KB.

Analisa Nikon S200 and Khalil Sony T series (in the leather case)

Kuni Nikon D90 DSLR (Qawiy also use similar model)

Just to reviews some of my friends cameras which I used recently. It is the Nikon D90 (Belongs to Qawiy and Kuni), Analisa Nikon s200 and Khalil T series.

Nikon D90 DSLR- this DSLR is quite heavy at first but later I get used to it. The user GUI on the screen is quite helpful. Possibly I will buy a Nikon DSLR this year.

Analisa Nikon S200- a handy 7 pixels camera. This camera photo will be spoiled if your hand is not stabilize.

Khalil T series Sony- The touchscreen setting sometimes slow me down. But is is a good camera in terms of picture quality.

ITB Career Day 22 January 2009- At last my "problem" and doubt regarding police car photographing solved. Luckily the traffic police are there to solved my problem. When I asked about "Is it an offence to photograph police cars?. He said" its ok, but as long your intention is good or just photographing for hobby. But in case get stopped by the cops. Jst tell the truth". Special thanks for him. Yeah, will photograph more police car again.

The Brunei worst flood that claimed two people lives had affect most of the areas in Brunei Muara. The hillsides suffered most where the area used to be a stable hillside also suffered lanslides. While the Gadong tunnel were closed. I just go to the class 1 disaster area where only slight damaged occur.

Airport fire station, now and then

New airport fire station completed and operational on 2008

Providing fire cover for the aircraft and the airport building and facilities itself is a challenging task for firefighters especially the Brunei Civil Aviation Fire Department (Bomba Airport). The department start to privide its fire cover with their first appliance which is the Thornycroft crash tender in 1960s. Later in 1970s as the new Brunei International Airport completes, the fire department operates from their new base which can house 6 appliance at a time.

As time goes by the department decicded to move and build a new station which completed in 2008. This new station is built larger and the appliance bay can accommodate up to 10 to 12 appliances at a time. When large scale incident airport occurs at the airport the appliances bay can be converted into Mass Casualty Triage.

While the main station deal with nearly all fire and rescue operation around the airport premises, the 2nd airport fire station which located near the aircraft hangar provides fire strike fire rescue in case fire occurs at the hangar. If situation become uncontrolled the 2nd station will contact the main base for support.

Heavy rain in KB 10 January 2009

The wet season come again to Kuala Belait. On last January 10 several areas in Belait and Seria town was submerged. The drains around are useless at that time as nearly all drains are overflowing. The situation was worsened with heavy rains for nearly 12 hours which stopped slowly in the afternoon. And the high tide which occur the day before until 10 Janury also worsened the situation.

Overview of the accident

11 January 2009, opening my Road Traffic Accident (RTA) album is the RTA case of the Pajero at the Tungku Link highway near the UBD Flyover. Believed to be happened at 11am, the RTA which seem as 'mini case' turns complicated when eyewitness say that a person with brain disorder are seen running away from the site thus more emergency personnel summoned including firefighters from the Jerudong FRS.

For me the crash is unique as the Pajero was driven at the dirt wall/section along the highway until it lost control and smashed the ground until it stopped in the dirt. Wonder how this crash occur?

Opening my natural disaster file is the photos of the High Tide in Seria River on 9 January 2009. The high tide submerged parts of Jalan Tengah Detour road heading towards the BSP HQ and caused a traffic slow down.

Ready to fight fire in HAZMAT case

Recently I bought a Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) specialist/investigator action model. Manufactured by Lanard and sold at Soon Lee Mega Mart for $26 later as time goes by and no one wants to buy they later discount it 50%. So become $13. Although it is not a serious action model and its kit didn't match as the real thing but is has a play value (for kids and also for adult as well).

The kit consist of :

1) Type 1 initial chemical protection suit

2) Walkie-Talkie

3) Road barrier

4) EMS Oxygen tank (C/W Mask)

5) Backpack CO2 extinguisher C/W BA Set
